Can a custody agreement be changed before the school year starts?
Yes. If your current custody arrangement no longer works for your child's needs, it's possible to request a modification before the school year begins. In North Carolina, however, you can't simply decide to change the schedule on your own if there's already a court order in place.
To modify a custody order, you'll generally need to show:
- There has been a substantial change in circumstances since the current order was entered.
- The requested change is in your child's best interests.
Back-to-school season often brings new schedules, school assignments, extracurricular activities, or transportation challenges. If those changes significantly affect your family's routine, it may be the right time to revisit your custody arrangement.
