Can I modify my spousal support if I lose my job or experience a major income change?

Yes—spousal support (alimony) can be modified in North Carolina if there has been a substantial change in circumstances since the original order was entered.

Examples include:

  • Job loss or significant reduction in income
  • Serious illness or disability
  • Retirement
  • A significant increase in the other party’s income

However, not all alimony orders are modifiable. If your spousal support is governed by a separation agreement, the agreement itself may limit or prohibit modification.

It’s important to act quickly. Alimony does not automatically change—you must file a motion with the court and obtain a new order.
