How long do I have to be separated before filing for divorce in North Carolina?
In North Carolina, most couples must live separate and apart for at least one year before filing for an absolute divorce.
To meet the separation requirement:

- At least one spouse must intend for the separation to be permanent.
- The separation must last for 12 consecutive months.
