Frequently Asked Questions
We know family law can feel overwhelming—and sometimes, just getting clear answers makes all the difference. Below you’ll find thoughtful responses to the questions we hear most often, designed to help you feel informed, prepared, and empowered as you move forward.

Is 50/50 custody always considered best for a child?
No, and I want to be honest with you about that even though it's not always what people expect to hear. North Carolina courts don't start from an assumption that equal time is automatically the healthiest arrangement. They start from what's actually best for your specific child.
A few things judges tend to weigh:
- Each parent's day-to-day involvement and history as a caregiver.
- The child's stability, including school, friendships, and routine.
- Each parent's ability to provide a safe, consistent environment.
- Logistics, like how close the parents live to each other and to the child's school.
Sometimes 50/50 is genuinely the right fit. Other times, a child does better with one steady home base and a strong, well-structured secondary schedule. Neither one is a reflection of who's the "better" parent. It's about what actually helps your child feel secure, and that's a very individual answer.
